California’s New Daylighting Law (AB 413)

California’s New Daylighting Law (AB 413)

Starting on January 1, 2025, it will be illegal in California to park within 20 feet of the approach of any marked or unmarked crosswalk, even if the approach does not have any red curbs painted.

On November 11, 2024, the SFMTA began issuing written WARNINGS for vehicles parked within 20 feet of any crosswalk in the direction of approaching traffic. Starting March 1, 2025, the SFMTA will begin issuing CITATIONS to comply with California law. Fines will start at $40.

How does it work?

Here are the diagrams from SFMTA (San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency).

Daylighting refers to keeping a zone clear of vehicles for a certain distance. This will make it much easier for people walking, biking and driving to see each other. And increased visibility reduces the risk of collisions for everyone. The new state law:

    • Prohibits parking within 20 feet of any intersection (or 15 feet if there is a curb extension or “bulb-out”).
    • Applies to the vehicle approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk.
    • Applies even if there are no signs or curb markings.

Here is the diagram from Sunnyvale Government News Center to explain this new state law applies to the vehicle approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk.
